Designer Ken Fulk Breathes New Life into an Old Cathedral

Designer Ken Fulk has transformed a dilapidated 1913 Romanesque Revival cathedral in San Francisco into Saint Joseph’s Arts Society, a vibrant cultural and retail space. Purchased in 2016, the once-decrepit building has been meticulously restored with the help of California architecture firm Page & Turnbull. The revitalized structure now includes a retail area featuring brands like Assouline and Officine Universelle Buly, a mezzanine with Carpenters Workshop Gallery's first West Coast location, and a private bar and lounge for Arts Society subscribers. The nave serves as a communal gathering space, with the apse set up for performances. Fulk's vision was to reflect the artistic spirit of the community and its contributions to the world.
